The very least, i have to admit this anime gave me the tears when i watched the ending!
Let me explain. It all begins with Otonashi Yuzuru, the protagonist of the story, suddenly waking up, only to discover he is in a school and that he has no memory of how he ended where he was. In actual truth, he has wounded up in an alternate world, or what people might call a purgatory, a bridge between life and the after-life / reincarnation. Where people who still have lingering attachments to the world stay on this bridge until they clear them. As illustrated by Otonashi in the first episode, the people in the afterlife school can die, experience death, but wake up a few moments later. There are also the presence of NPCs, "non-player characters" of which do not RESPOND at ALL to anything you do to them, normally teachers and students of the school.
Then in the first episode, he dies. Haha. No, seriously, he dies.
Girl Dead Monster |
Angel apparently has extraordinary powers, of which are "Handsonic", "Distortion", "Delay" and "Harmonics", etc. Which she kills members of the SSS mercilessly. The SSS use weapons to deflect her, and for the reason why they are fighting, well, you might want to watch to find out.
A vice-president for the student council also appears, called Naoi, who is able to hypnotise NPCs to his will. He is able to help Otonashi recover his memories of how he died.
As the story progresses, it becomes clear that all the beings in this world had suffered a terrible & emotional life & death, especially Otonashi & Yuri. Suddenly, weird shadows start appearing in the campus, and devour people, turning them into NPCs. Apparently, a program was written to eliminate love on the world, of which the programmer himself has turned into a NPC.

She also has a sad story... |
Angel Beats! premiered in Spring 2010, with 13 episodes, from April 3 to June 26. It was subbed by Mazui & Static-Subs.
Sigh... I wish there is a second season. But due to the Season 1 ending, that would be impossible.
Hint for next review: What happens in a town where you live?
